John Duncan Dunn, born in North Berwick in 1874, was the scion of a famous golfing family, his great uncle Willie being one of the "Dunnies" who played in high-wager matches against Old Tom Morris and Alan Robertson. Initially he studied medicine at Edinburgh but left to join the family golfing business, In 1892 he established a clubmaking business with his brother at the Prince's Club in Mitcham, Surrey. A great all-round sportsman he played for a Scottish team against England at football, won the British Team Roller-Skating Championship, played rugby for Bournemouth Rovers and was also a good shot. He laid out many of the early golf courses in the Netherlands, including Den Haag, Haarlem, Arnhem and Doomse. He made a five month trip to America in 1895 and returned in 1897 and became assistant to his uncle, Willie Jr, at the Ardsley Country Club. He later opened his own shop on 42nd Street in Manhattan and managed the golf department of the Overman Wheel Company in Chicopee Falls, MA. In 1900 he took over from his uncle as manager of the famous BGI Co and, in the same year, laid out the Ekwanok CC course in Vermont with Walter Travis.
