Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Robert G. Hanxleden (illustrator). Regular Edition. xiv, 354 pages. Illustrations. Bibliography. Index of Names. DJ has some wear and soiling. Glenn was a fourth-generation Coloradan, born in Fort Collins, Colo., on Sept. 11, 1926. Glenn graduated early, at age 17 to join the U.S. Navy and serve his country at war. He was on the USS Minneapolis CA-36, which earned 17 battle stars in World War II, the most of any ship in the war. Glenn stayed with the "Minnie" as occupation forces in Tsing Tao, China. After the war, Glenn attended the Colorado School of Trades and graduated as a licensed gunsmith. As an avid student of history and pilot, Glenn had a deep interest in the air war in Europe in WWII. He took writing classes at Colorado State University, where he was one of the only students to have his first effort at writing published in a magazine. After years of research, his first book, titled "Kriegies, Caterpillars and Lucky Bastards," was published and told the stories of the pilots and airmen who served in the 8th Air Force Bomb Group. The history of Eighth Air Force begins on 2 January 1942 with its activation at Savannah Army Air Base, Georgia. In quick order, on 5 January, Major General Carl Spaatz assumed command of HQ Eighth Air Force at Bolling Field, Washington, DC. On 12 May, the first contingent of USAAF personnel arrived in England to join the Eighth Air Force. Established on 22 February 1944 by the redesignation of VIII Bomber Command at RAF Daws Hill in High Wycombe, England, the Eighth Army Air Force (8 AAF) was a United States Army Air Forces combat air force in the European Theater of World War II (1939/41-1945), engaging in operations primarily in the Northern Europe AOR; carrying out strategic bombing of enemy targets in France, the low countries, and Germany;[4] and engaging in air-to-air fighter combat against enemy aircraft until the German capitulation in May 1945. It was the largest of the deployed combat Army Air Forces in numbers of personnel, aircraft, and equipment.
