'Der Tinker' was written in code in September 1944 while Fallada was in prison on a charge of attempted murder. He was later acquitted and released and went to live in Berlin. His German publisher Herr Rowohlt knew of its existence, found the manuscript and deciphered it. It was then published under his imprint in 1950, three years after Fallada's death. This, the first English translation by Charlotte and A.L. Lloyd was subsequently published two years later.
