Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Who were Canada's ten most romantic couples of the twentieth century? What were this country's worst disasters, its ten best beers, and its most controversial works of art in the past one hundred years? Where will you find the most haunted places in Canada and who are Canada's greatest heroes, its most accomplished athletes, and its most despised criminals? The Great Canadian Book of Lists chronicles a century of achievements, trends, important and influential people, and fascinating events that have shaped this country as it heads into a new millennium. Award-winning writers Mark Kearney and Randy Ray, who have delighted readers with their bestselling books The Great Canadian Trivia Book and The Great Canadian Trivia Book 2, turn the spotlight on the twentieth century to determine the best, worst, and most significant happenings in our lives. Not content with supplying a shopping list of items about Canada, Kearney and Ray provide plenty of details to support why certain people and events are included on the lists. And their statistical snapshots comparing a variety of societal trends over different years show readers how Canada has changed in the course of the past century. You'll also learn how experts from the worlds of science, sports, lifestyle, literature, and politics rate the personalities and events that have made Canada what it is today. And several guest celebrities weigh in with lists they've created exclusively for The Great Canadian Book of Lists. Enlightening, controversial and fun, The Great Canadian Book of Lists is bound to start as many arguments as it settles. Was Guy Lafleur a better hockey player than Rocket Richard? Why are rower Silken Laumann and actress Margot Kidder on the same list? What were the best Canadian novels of the twentieth century? And what are some key milestones achieved by Canadian women, medical doctors, inventors, and musicians? Innovations and flops, successes and failures, comebacks and breakthroughs, record setters and trend setters: You'll find them all in The Great Canadian Book of Lists. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Franklin Conspiracy is an absorbing account of the single most enigmatic event in Canadian history. In 1845, two British Royal Navy ships, the Erebus and the Terror, commanded by Sir John Franklin, entered the Canadian Arctic in search of the Northwest Passage. Neither ship returned. A fifteen-year search uncovered evidence of unparalleled disaster, but to this day no one knows exactly how the 129 men of the Franklin Expedition met their deaths. Although the expedition did not run out of food, there is clear evidence of cannibalism. The ships carried two hundred message cylinders with them, yet failed to leave records. Stranger still, an earlier explorer, Thomas Simpson, was reputedly murdered for the "secret of the Northwest Passage." What was this "secret"? The Franklin Conspiracy is an exhaustively researched, compellingly reasoned answer to that question. The result is a shocking saga of conspiracy, cover-up, and unbelievable secrets. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Scott, Jennifer - Designer (illustrator). Third Printing. 189 Pages. Covers has some corner wear and light creasing. No other defects noted to this tight book with no marks or stamps. It was an irrational decision. Despite having just moved into a beautiful new house, the Williams family gave in to an odd, overwhelming desire to purchase and move into a Victorian home they had come upon by chance. They were curious, of course, as to why the house had, in the past, had such a high vacancy rate - no one ever seemed to live in it for a long period of time. But that curiosity didn't last long, because shortly after moving in, strange things began to happen. It became abundantly clear that the home's past owners had all had a reason for leaving: fear. The Williams new home was haunted. At first, the family tried telling themselves there were logical explanations for the strange things they all were witnessing. But before long they came to accept the fact that they were sharing their home with ghosts. This book is the Williams family's story from the point of view of the mother, Dorah. Through her chilling reminiscences, we witness the all-too-real goings-on in the house. And we join the family as they seek a way to bring an end to the paranormal events that were occurring with ever more frequency and intensity, and learn why the events began in the first place. Contents in 21 Chapters: The Open House, Steps Through Time, Watching from the Window, The Floating Woman, Buried Treasures, Awake in the Night, SOS, Out of Thin Air, The Young Girl, Investigating the Paranormal, Out of Control, Finding a Key, The Woman at the Tree, The Newspapers, Page Five. A Gift of Flowers. Angels in the Doorway. Power Problems. The Basement Flood. Go to the Light. And Digging for the Backyard Pool.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Was there an actual geographical location for the Garden of Eden, and what really went on there? What strange, dangerous powers lay hidden in the Ark of the Covenant, and where is it now? What did the Prophet Ezekiel see? Could it have been a spaceship? What saved Daniel from the lions, and Shadrach and his friends from the furnace? What were the mysterious Urim and Thummim, and how did they work? Was Jesus married to Mary Magadalen? Was it at his own wedding that he changed water into wine? Did he heal the sick and resurrect Lazarus from the dead? All these intriguing questions, and many more, are answered in Mysteries of the Bible. The Bible is a unique collection of sacred books and oral traditions that dates back over 5,000 years. It contains genuine history but also myths, legends, fables, and poems. There are also books of law, ethics, and prophecy. The four Gospels describe the life of Christ. The Book of Revelation addresses the future of civilization, including the End of the World and Judgment Day. The receptive mind is always ready to consider new ideas and evaluate them fearlessly and rationally. In their attempt to find truth, the authors have removed the Bible from its previously inaccessible pedestal and they treat it as objectively as any other piece of valuable research data. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Late spring in Oslo, Ontario. The annual Ibsen Festival begins with auditions, then rehearsals, and, finally, performances. This year, the Ibfest features productions of five classic plays: The Twins, a renaissance play in the, er, tradition of Shakespeare; Virtue Slandered, a restoration comedy in the, um, fashion of Sheridan; The Raj, a nineteen century look at those quirky, madcap, but well-meaning Brits in a backward society (its a musical!); Pantilous in Crete, a classic Greek tragedy about an Athenian, having offended Zeus, who is doomed to live a life of horrors; and the Canadian classic, Frozen Wheat, about a Quebucois couple stranded on the prairies in the dead of winter, their son growing up Anglais, their daughter pregnant, with relatives from Newfoundland causing havoc and humorous but touching situations. The actors in the company include (among many others) Dirk Hart, the gorgeous American film star, making an attempt at serious theatre; Simon Webber-Douglas, Canadian-born but British-trained, which makes him almost good; and Julia Hudson, talented, Canadian-born and trained, and the target of the Ibfestos sarcasm, sadism, and cruelty. Antony Manley-Dunn presides over the Ibfest as one imagines Cecil Rhodes did the continent of Africa. Claptrap is a grand satire of the colonial mentality that governs the theatre festivals of Canada. Anyone who has worked at, performed in, been to, or even heard about the Stratford or Shaw festivals will laugh heartily and with recognition. Although a play, Claptrap reads much like a comic novel; here is Tom Woods description of the development of the festival: Oslos biggest claim to fame before the Festival was the Hastverk Fish Pickling Plant (Herring and Smelt). When the town was floundering in the early 1960s, the city fathers hit upon the idea of having a summer festival of Norwegian culture. Dancing, food, sports, and the community players performed A Dolls House at the town hall. The cultural festival failed miserably, but the play was a modest success. The town fathers decided to follow in the footsteps of two other theatrical festivals and gussied up the town to look more period. 1850s Norway, to be exact. Local businesses slapped on facades and adopted Ibsenesque names: the hair salon became Hedda Hair; the pub, Gabblers; the funeral parlor, Ghosts; the hotel and convention centre, Gynt Pier Inn. Claptrap is a grand satire of the colonial mentality that governs the theatre festivals of Canada. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Did Rasputin, the mad monk of Tsarist Russia, possess supernatural powers? Who was the mysterious prisoner in the Bastille who has gone down in history as "The Man in the Iron Mask"? Did he possess a priceless secret which Louis XIV desperately wanted to learn? Victorian Britain was terrorised by a weird super-athlete known to the popular press of those days as "Spring-heeled Jack." Was he just an eccentric gymnast, or could he have been an alien? Who or what was the mysterious man known as the Count of St. Germain whose abnormal powers seemed to defy both time and space - and is he still with us today? What strange powers of prophecy did Coinneach Odhar, the famous Brahan Seer, really possess? Was Berenger Sauniere, the enigmatic Priest of Rennes-Le-Chateau, one of the last guardians of a secret older than the Sphinx? Could the sinister Aleister Crowley have been merely a pathetic victim of self-deception and his own inflated ego, or did he really possess magical powers? What amazing secrets did electrical engineer Nikola Tesla control?Gurdjieff - one of the most amazing men of his time - has never been fully understood: what was the true meaning behind his strangely ambivalent messages? Was Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky a genius with strange paranormal powers, or merely a charlatan and a sensation-seeker? Francis Dashwood of Medmenham Abbey, leader of a sect of the wildest debauchees who roared their way across the eighteenth century, was an expert in the Black Arts. All of these strange, mysterious, and intriguing characters - and many others - are described, examined, and analyzed in The World's Most Mysterious People. This is a collection of remarkable and mysterious people, from all ages and places - including our own. Some the authors have met, others were researched carefully from reliable archives. Some are Canadian, others are from the US, the UK, and all over the world. All are mysterious; all are intriguing; all are worth studying. Can anyone learn to use mysterious powers like theirs? To update what a great thinker once said: "The proper study of people is other human beings." And the more mysterious those human beings are, the more we shall learn from studying them. This is a collection of remarkable and mysterious people, from all ages and places, including our own. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. It has been called Canada's most haunted province. While such a claim is impossible to prove, British Columbia does abound with tales of the supernatural. Ghost Stories of British Columbia is a comprehensive collection of these tales, drawing from the province's history, its archives, and its people. There are ghosts from the distant past, and ghosts from the present day. Legends that are familiar to many, and accounts that, to date, have only been heard by a few. Shady apparitions from the coastline, the interior, and the isolated north. And each story is a true account of someone's experience with a ghost. In Burnaby, a young child is repeatedly urged by two spectral visitors to follow them back "to the other side." The dedicated publisher of the Surrey Leader returns to check on the new issue -- weeks after his death. The image of a screaming young woman haunts a grove of bushes in Beacon Hill Park -- years before a woman matching the image is murdered there. Barkerville -- a town designed to bring the history of the gold rush to life -- truly hosts the "spirit" of the past. Victoria honours its British past -- with two of its own haunted castles. In Creston -- an eccentric stonemason's spirit occupies the unusual home he once planned to be buried in. They are the mysteries, the unexplained, the eerie, and amazing stories meant to be told by campfire or candlelight. They are the true ghost stories of British Columbia, and they wait for you in these pages. A comprehensive collection of supernatural tales drawn from the provinces history, its archives, and its people.
