Paperback. Condition: Very Good. As a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, John Everett Millais spearheaded the most radically modern artistic group in the history of English art. This new publication will present for the first time a balanced view of the entirety of the artist's career, taking advantage of much new scholarship that allows us to see him in the fullness of his production, and to treat the late works of his career as being as remarkable and as vital as his Pre-Raphaelite productions. The catalogue relocates Millais' work to its proper place within prevailing currents of European artistic innovation and practice in the second half of the nineteenth-century. Millais is revealed as a complex artist who was as interested in Realism as he was in Aestheticism, with significant and surprising links to Manet, Carolus-Duran, Whistler and Sargent, and who helped to develop a resurgence in taste for British eighteenth-century art. The most complete and up to date publication available on Millais, this catalogue will feature chapters on 'Early Works'; 'Pictures of Romance'; 'Aestheticism'; 'The Grand Tradition'; 'Fancy Pictures'; 'Society Portraits' and 'Millais in Scotland: Late Landscapes'. It will also include a full chronology. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. "A Bigger Splash" will take a new look at the dynamic relationship between performance and painting from 1950 to the present day. Taking its title from David Hockney's iconic 1967 image of a Californian swimming pool and Jack Hazan's docu-fiction film about Hockney's life, it will bring together a range of key works by artists including Yves Klein, Jackson Pollock, Cindy Sherman and Karen Kilimnik. Moving through half a century of work in painting, video and photography, and including archival and documentary material, this book will show how performance art has challenged and energised the medium of painting for successive generations. The book will contain three essays: the evolution of contemporary practice via a key period of experiment in the 1960s-70s; a consideration of the issue of pictorial space in painting with reference to history; and an examination of how the theoretical concept of 'performativity' relates to the issues played out within that high period of 'performance art'. By offering readers new ways of looking at some familiar works in Tate's Collection, and yet also bringing to light recent and new works that experiment with performance and painting in a variety of ways, this promises to be one the most authorative and dynamic studies of the subject yet published. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . Goodreads notes: "Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) was one of the masters of eighteenth-century art. This book, published to accompany a major international exhibition covering the artist's entire career, reveals the sheer range, quality, and originality of Gainsborough's work from his engagingly naturalistic landscapes and touching images of children to his sophisticated and glamorous society portraits. In their essay, Michael Rosenthal and Martin Myrone explore his dynamic involvement with the social world of his day, as he endeavored to forge an art that engaged meaningfully with contemporary life. A second essay examines the development of Gainsborough's technique and working methods, from his early works and life in Sudbury, Suffolk, to the grand studio and gallery at Schomberg House, London, where he spent his final years. The astonishing range of works illustrated here fully demonstrates the variety and brilliance of Gainsborough's art. The paintings he chose for display in London's newly emerging exhibition venues are grouped together, providing a valuable insight into how he wanted his career and art to be understood. Also explored are his precocious early works, his subtle approach to the lucrative world of fashionable portraiture, the often pointed social commentary behind his seductive landscapes, and the exploratory nature of the last works". Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Richard Wilson was born in London in 1953. Descended on one side from a line of builders and on the other of artists, his work often comes closer to engineering or even architecture than it does to traditional sculpture. Typically he transforms the viewer's environment into something unsettling and strange by the interventions he makes, whether in the internal space of a gallery, the structure of a building or in one of the ships with which he has a particular affinity. Perhaps his best-known work is 20:50, currently on show at, and probably the most popular exhibit in, the Saatchi Gallery in London. For 20:50, Wilson flooded a gallery space with oil, which has a highly reflective surface. Into the oil is built a kind of narrow pier or promenade down which one person at a time can walk, the oil perilously close to their body. So reflective is the oil that the room induces a strong sense of disorientation. Further along the River Thames, next to the Millennium Dome, is another Wilson piece that provides an unexpected sight. The skeletal ship A Slice of Reality, its sides removed and with the tides moving freely through it, is both a startling sculptural object in its own right and a comment on the vanished shipping industry that was once a mainstay of the river community. In Los Angeles, Wilson was inspired by one of the most ubiquitous symbols of Californian life, the swimming pool, suspending a fibreglass pool shell from a sixty foot-long pipe in MOCA's subterranean gallery (Deep End). In addition to and often in conjunction with these large-scale projects, Wilson makes films and sculpture, takes photographs and stages performance events and has been a formative influence on a generation of British artists. This lavishly illustrated career survey includes a new interview with Wilson and examines six key works in depth. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The American artist Ed Ruscha (b. 1937) has worked in a variety of media, including painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, books and film, to produce art that is at once playful and profound. Based in Los Angeles, since the late 1950s, he was influential in the development of Pop Art on the West coast, particularly through the production of a series of artist's books that continue to inspire younger generations of artists. Ruscha's works often involve the setting of a single word or phrase against a coloured or stained background or a monumental landscape. 'Words have temperatures to me', he has said. 'When they reach a certain point and become hot words, then they appeal to me.Sometimes I have a dream that if a word gets too hot and too appealing, it will boil apart, and I won't be able to read or think of it. Usually I catch them before they get too hot.' This book traces the development of Ruscha's work across five decades, exploring its engagement with Dada and Surrealism, Pop, the rise of Conceptual art, photography, literature and cinema. It will also focus in detail on Ruscha's techniques - in particular, his delicate drawings and prints using organic materials - and the process of making art as documented in his notebooks. With stunning reproductions and new interview material, the book will explore his oeuvre's internal logic as words, images and phrases resurface time and again throughout his career. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A lively and accessible introduction to the life and work of David Hockney, one of the most popular and influential British artists of the 20th century. From his portraits and images of Los Angeles swimming pools, through to his drawings and photography, Yorkshire landscapes and most recent paintings, his art has examined, probed and questioned how the perceived world of movement, space and time can be captured in two dimensions. Part of the Tate Introduction series, this book offers a concise and engaging account of Hockney's life, his art, and the ongoing debates concerning his significance.
