Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Graham Crowley (b. 1950) became a painter in the early 1970s out of conviction for the validity of painting, at a time when artists of the '1968 generation' were seeking to break the link with painting and its traditions. This book is the first to review the achievement of a highly regarded contemporary artist. In a deliberate reaction to British dependence on American models, Crowley looked initially to 'European Modernism', and the clamorous, bright, exciting, 'non-figurative' images he was making by the late 1970s were directly inspired by Leger. Quite quickly his visual language moved to the figurative, with the need to draw content into his images: with his conscious adoption of 'genre' painting, his subject became increasingly his own life and work experience. Following landscape paintings of housing estates focussed on urban decay, Crowley directed his attention to the genres of rural landscape and flower painting, the landscape of West Cork inspiring his most recent paintings since Crowley moved there in the mid-1990s. Martin Holman's engaging text surveys the artist's entire career to date and is accompanied by colour reproductions of key works. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Light and shadow, reflection, colour and motion - these are the primary elements of visual art. Shadow play, tricks of perspective, anamorphoses and magic lanterns have fascinated artists and craftsmen throughout the centuries and continue to inspire and stimulate the imagination to this day. The Art of Illusion explores this world of perceptual paradox through the astonishing collection of the German experimental filmmaker Werner Nekes, and the work of contemporary artists including Christian Boltanski, Carsten Holler, Tony Oursler and Markus Raetz. The Art of Illusion illustrates a vast range of intriguing optical media and artworks from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries - manuscripts, prints and books, optical devices and experiments, early cameras, games and toys. This handsome volume incorporates optical tricks, puzzles and illusions, which are sure to make it a collector's item. It will appeal to everyone interested in the history of art, cinema, science and ideas and visual culture from the Renaissance to the present day. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Biennials: The Exhibitions we Love to Hate examines one of the most significant recent transitions in the contemporary art world: the proliferation of large-scale international recurrent survey shows of contemporary art, commonly referred to as contemporary biennials. Since the mid-1980s biennials have been instrumental in shaping curating as an autonomous practice. These exhibitions are also said to have provided increased visibility for certain types of new art practices, notably those that are socially and politically committed, research-based and site-specific, and to have underminedsome of the more traditional art media, such as painting, drawing or sculpture. They have been responsible forsubstantially reshaping the contemporary art world and disrupting the existing value chain of the art market, which now relies on biennials as much as it does on major museums'acquisitions and exhibitions.Rafal Niemojewski, Director of the Biennial Foundation, deftly unpicks the critical discussion and controversy surrounding contemporary biennials. Branded by some critics as showcases of neo-liberalism run amok, in which culture has become synonymous with the dollar-generating leisure industry, biennials have also been associated with the production of monumental artworks which are both highly consumable and photogenic (Instagrammable). The exhibitions we love to hate? This engaging publication makes an essential contribution to a fascinating cultural debate. The Rise of the Contemporary Biennial offers a critical assessment of the current discussions around the subject of contemporary biennials and how these might be used to illuminate potential new approaches in this area of study.
