Book First Edition
Cloth, small folio, 27 cm, xi, 155 pp, facs. From the blurb - "After the translators of the Authorized Version of the Bible had finished their work, a small, select group of scholars and churchmen assembled at Stationers' Hall in London in 1610 to survey and revise the entire book. Anthony Walker, in his sketch of the life of John Bois, a member of this final company of review, reports: 'Whilst they were imployed in this last businesse, he, & he only, took notes of their proceedings: which notes he kept till his dying day? (1645)'. The notes, it had been thought, were lost. But in 1964 Professor Allen by chance came upon a puzzling reference to the notes. He successfully traced them to the Corpus Christi College Library at Oxford University, where, among the papers of William Fulman - a seventeenth-century antiquarian and collector - Fulman's handwritten copy of John Bois's original notes had lain undiscovered since 1688. Historians have long speculated on the importance of the Bois notes and the answers they might provide to questions such as whether or not the translators kept in mind figures from classical rhetoric; which lexicons were used in translating; which Renaissance Greek scholars were consulted; and which ontological questions might have been subject to interpretative argument. In his introduction to Translating for King James Professor Allen argues the authenticity, provides the historical setting, and comments on the literary and theological implications of the notes. And the actual notes (in Latin, Greek and English), which are concerned with Romans to Revelation (the Apocalypse), are reproduced in facsimile. Allen's translations and annotations appear on pages facing the facsimiles and Appendix1 contains Allen's identification of classical and patristic sources cited in Bois's notes. Anthony Walker's biography of Bois is reprinted in full in Appendix II. " An ex-library copy with the residue of a label on the front free endpaper, a perforation stamp on the title-page, accession marks on the verso of the title-page, and with the dustwrapper (with library spine-label) in a protective sleeve which is taped to the boards.
