Hardcover. First edition. Flat SIGNED by Trinity's sixteenth & now emeritus Rector, the Rev. Daniel Paul Matthews, on half-title. FIRST EDITION HARDCOVER-- blindstamped red cloth in VERY GOOD Condition in VERY GOOD Dustjacket showing minor shelfwear. Signed page shows a couple of surface ditzels, otherwise INTERIOR NEAR PRISTINE: clean, tight, bright. Approx 12 1/4" by 12 1/4," 152 pp. w/ Index. PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED throughout with color and black & white photographs. Text by Dena Merriam. Photography by David Finn. Perhaps its most recent claim to fame is that Trinity's chapel, St. Paul'sacross the street from the World Trade Center served as a 24-hour center of refuge and relief for eight months after the 911 attack. However, Trinity's unique place in American history was secured from its inception in 1697, when King William III granted it the charter for New York City's first Anglican church, As president, George Washington worshipped there when New York served as the capital of the nation. Alexander Hamilton, the country's first secretary of the treasury, is buried in the churchyard next to soldiers who served in the Revolution. The building itself is a neo-gothic gem conceived by Robert Upjohn, the English cabinet-maker who went on to become one of the New World's celebrated architects. Trinity also occupies a unique & seminal place in the Episcopal Diocese of New York. A copy of this book SIGNED by Rev. Daniel Paul Matthews XVI Rector of Trinity, now retired, is quite a RARITY, an uncommon find suitable for gifting or collection.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Gray cloth-covered boards with title stamped in yellow on cover and spine; with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs by numerous artists. Text by Anne H. Hoy. 208 pp., with four-color and black-and-white plates throughout. 10-1/8 x 10-1/8 inches. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket (moderate surface wear and toning, else Fine). From the publisher: "This book is divided into five chapters, plus and introduction that relates the work to other photography, both contemporary and historical. The subject of the first chapter is narrative tableaux -- scenes that tell stories, whether shocking, poignant, or mysterious -- by artists ranging from Joel-Peter Witkin to Eileen Cowin and Laurie Simmons. Portraits and self-portraits constitute the next chapter, with fictional personalities created by Cindy Sherman and others, as well as complex constructions by Lucas Samaras, Chuck Close, and Nancy Burson. Chapter three focuses on still lifes of all types, fabricated to be photographed by artists as dissimilar as Barbara Kasten, James Casebere, and Frank Majore. Various appropriators, including Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince, and Sherrie Levine, critique the icons of contemporary society in the fourth chapter. The fifth concentrates on the imaginitive ways that artists David Hockney, Jerry Uelsmann, Betty Hahn and others manipulate the physical elements of photography to produce unprecedented results.".
