Softcover. Condition: Good. Filled with timeless, pertinent, and well-documented information, Journey With Children is a heartfelt, enthralling memoir of Frances Hawkins and her abiding dedication to the education of young children.A mentor and role model for professionals who care deeply about the children they work with, Hawkins emphasizes the importance of putting on a different lens to view each child as an individual. Having been a teacher for more than five decades, her views on how war, depression, and other societal issues can affect children's development and learning are insightful and thought-provoking.Most of the children Hawkins writes about are impoverished and troubled. A cornerstone of Hawkins's teaching ethic was moving her students towards a more hands-on, manipulative style. Her writing addresses all of the issues that confound people involved in education, including boredom, dropouts, and the inability to "reach" many students. By interspersing comments on early childhood education teaching practice, theories in child growth and development, and material from child psychology, Hawkins enriches the reader's understanding and grasp of the concepts and broader importance of cultural and educational implication.Journey With Children will be invaluable reading for experienced educators, university teacher trainers, pre-service and in-service teachers, parents, school board members and community members involved in education. It will be especially inspiring to those planning a career in the education of young children.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Colorado Congressman Wayne N. Aspinall was variously dubbed the "Ruler of the Land," a "bridge between the old and new Wests," and the environmental movement's "most durable foe." The late David Brower, the notable Sierra Club leader, remarked that the environmental movement had seen "dream after dream dashed on the stony continents of Wayne Aspinall."In Wayne Aspinall and the Shaping of the American West, Steven C. Schulte details a political career that encompassed some of the most crucial years in the development of the twentieth-century West. As chairman of the House Interior and Insular Affairs Committee from 1959 to 1973, Aspinall shaped the nation's reclamation, land, wilderness, and natural resource policies. His crusty and dtermined personality was at the enter of some of the key environmental battles of the twentieth century, including the Echo Park Dam fight, the struggle for the Wilderness Act, and the long controversy over the Central Arizona Project.

Softcover. Condition: Good. Revised. Photography in Colorado was encouraged as early as 1861, when newspaper editor William Byers wrote in the Rocky Mountain News, "Secure the shadow, ere the substance perish," and roused the citizenry to take photographs of their families, friends, landscape, homes, and mills in order to document their lives and share them with others. The revised edition of Colorado: A History in Photographs draws on this rich legacy, portraying Colorado's history in images taken from the frontier era to the present, all accompanied by a vivid, updated narrative.Presenting a broad view of countless aspects of life in Colorado and including 270 black-and-white photographs, this book will inform, entertain, and inspire all those who delight in learning more about the history of the Centennial State.

Softcover. Condition: Good. The struggle between Indians and whites for land did not end on the battlefields in the 1800s. When this hostile era closed with Native Americans forced onto reservations, no one expected that rich natural resources lay beneath these lands that white America would desperately desire. Yet oil, timber, fish, coal, water, and other resources were discovered to be in great demand in the mainstream market, and a new war began with Indian tribes and their leaders trying to protect their tribal natural resources throughout the twentieth century. In The Invasion of Indian Country in the 20th Century, Donald Fixico details the course of this struggle, providing a wealth of information on the resources possessed by individual tribes and the way in which they were systematically defrauded and stripped of these resources. Fixico contends that federal policies originally devised to protect Indian interests ironically worked against the Indian nations as the tribes employed new tactics with the Council of Energy Resources Tribes, using the law in courts and applying aggressive business leadership to combat the capitalist invasion by mainstream America.Fixico's analysis of this war being waged throughout the century and today serves as an indispensable reference tool for anyone interested in Native American history and current government policy with regard to Indian lands.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Human culture and animal behavior are commonly differentiated through perceived contrasts in the ability to use tools, to invent symbols, to form words, and so on. In Hominid Culture in Primate Perspective, primatologists discuss how human thought, language, and culture are actually rooted in the evolution of primate cognition, communication, and "precultural" behavior. Their research indicates that the perceived differences between human culture and primate behavior are increasingly difficult to identify.Exploring the questions surrounding the origin and evolution of human culture using nonhuman primate data, the contributors examine posture, gesture, and locomotion; object manipulation and tool use; social cognition and kinship; simulation, deception, and play; cultural diversity in the behavior of non-human primates; and the late origins of vocal language in human evolution.Hominid Culture in Primate Perspective is a valuable collection of current and thoughtful ideas that will be of particular interest to anthropologists, primatologists, and students of culture and complex behavior in evolution.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Photographs by Hikaru C. IwasakiForeword by the Honorable Norman Y. MinetaIn Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens, Lane Ryo Hirabayashi gathers a unique collection of photographs by War Relocation Authority photographer Hikaru Iwasaki, the only full-time WRA photographer from the period still living. With substantive focus on resettlement - and in particular Iwasaki's photos of Japanese Americans following their release from WRA camps from 1943 to 1945 - Hirabayashi explores the WRA's use of photography in its mission not only to encourage "loyal" Japanese Americans to return to society at large as quickly as possible but also to convince Euro-Americans this was safe and advantageous. Hirabayashi also assesses the relative success of the WRA project, as well as the multiple uses of the photographs over time, first by the WRA and then by students, scholars, and community members in the present day.Although the photos have been used to illustrate a number of publications, this book is the first sustained treatment addressing questions directly related to official WRA photographs. How and under what conditions were they taken? Where were they developed, selected, and stored? How were they used during the 1940s? What impact did they have during and following the war?By focusing on the WRA's Photographic Section, Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens makes a unique contribution to the body of literature on Japanese Americans during World War II.

Softcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Following the Civil War, legislation was passed in 1866 authorizing the enlistment of Black regiments, which led to the formation Of the Tenth Cavalry and other military units. The Tenth Cavalry was to have a long and distinguished history of military service, playing a major role in the Indian campaigns of the American West and in the Spanish-American War. When it was first published in 1899 - in an age of Jim Crow laws and general discrimination against Blacks and other minorities - Under Fire with the Tenth U.S. Cavalry received little attention. However, as interest in Black history increased, Under Fire emerged a minor classic and has been reprinted several times. It is the relative absence of material on Black soldiers and of material from enlisted men in general that gives Under Fire its significance. This edition, with more than one hundred illustrations and a new introduction by historian Richard Ellis, remains a valuable source of information for those interested in Black and U.S. military history.

Hardcover. Condition: used. Rocky Mountain National Park is the sixth most visited park in the United States. Established in 1915, this gem of the central Rockies is facing increasingly complex environmental pressures, both from within and beyond the parks boundaries. In Rocky Times in Rocky Mountain National Park, ecologist and former park consultant Karl Hess examines these problems and presents a stirring and powerful argument for drastic changes in how the park should be managed.Drawing from his years of biological research within and adjacent to the park and from files and reports of the parks own biologists, Hess addresses a wide range of issues, including the impacts to the parks ecosystem from a growing elk heard; the consequences of generations of fire suppression, and the effects of increasing numbers of park visitors and development surrounding the park.Hess argues that the National Park Service has faltered in its mission of preservation. His book is a call for sweeping changes to make park managers more accountable to the parks ecological health and to end what he calls "predatory politics" within the National Park Service.Rocky Times in Rocky Mountain National Park is a compelling yet disquieting account of the condition of one of Americas premier parks. It will undoubtedly spark debate among scientists, park managers, policymakers, environmentalists, and others concerned about the future of Rocky Mountain National Park and the nations entire park system.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Until now, the mysterious death of Kicking Bird, one of the great leaders of the Kiowas, has overshadowed other significant events of his life. Stan Hoig fills this void in scholarship by providing a more comprehensive account of this important tribal leader and the problems the Kiowas faced during his lifetime. Originally a tribe of the northern mountain regions, the Kiowas migrated to the prairies of Colorado, Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma during the late eighteenth century to take up a buffalo-hunting existence. Like other Plains tribes, the Kiowas were caught squarely in the thrust of Anglo-American military power, forcing the critical decision between continued resistance or acculturation. Kiowas also faced starvation as professional white hunters killed off the vital buffalo herds, which, by government design, were supposed to supplement the meagre, and often tardy, rations promised to the Kiowas by treaty.

Softcover. Condition: Good. During the last half of the nineteenth century, several thousand African Americans moved to the American western frontier. Before the Civil War, some went west to California as slaves of gold miners and to Utah as slaves of Mormons. Later, free black men joined the U.S. Army and served in frontier outposts while others were hired on as cowboys on western ranches and cattle trails. Once Reconstruction ended in the South, discrimination and segregation caused more African Americans to seek better opportunities elsewhere where prejudice was less evident. The significant role played by African Americans in the settlement and development of the West has largely been ignored and neglected until now. African Americans on the Western Frontier remedies that historic neglect with fifteen essays that explore the contributions that African American men and women made to the western frontier-as miners, homesteaders, town builders, entrepreneurs, and as ordinary, civic-minded citizens. This rich and diverse story of the African American western experience during the frontier era is for scholars and students of western history as well as anyone interested in African American history, and is an important work for all Americans to read.

Kay Parker Schweinfurth's "Prayer on Top of the Earth: The Spiritual Universe of the Plains Apaches," offers numerous stories recounted by seven self-appointed tribal historians, the last surviving primary repositories of Apache history, born between 1876 and 1903. The Plains Apaches' mystical kinship with the land and the natural environment that the tribes perceived and nurtured is embodied in their four sacred medicine bundles-the no bikagseli, or "prayer on top of the earth."
