First thus. [x], 470 pages, illustrated with map and photographic illustrations, a very good copy. Brilliantly written, compelling and highly original, The Looming Tower is the first book to tell the full story of al-Qaeda from its roots up to 9/11. Square quarto; hardcover, with decorated endpapers; 324pp., with many monochrome and colour illustrations. Minor wear; light scattered spotting to the preliminaries; previous owner's name in ink to the first blank page. Dustwrapper spotted to the verso; now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Very good. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. In the 1930s and 40s they were Australia's 'rebels' - Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Arthur Boyd, John Perceval, Yosl Bergner, Noel Counihan and others, artists whose work reflected the intensity of their lives. Against a climate of the Great Depression, World War II and the beginnings of the Cold War, these artists and their older forerunners broke through to a new art. There were clashes between radical artists and conservative patrons, politicians, public figures; between one rebel faction and another. Richard Haese, in examining not only the art of the period but also the social and political preoccupations of these artists, their friends and their critics, recreates this remarkable scene in a way that enlarges our understanding of the intellectual forces of our development, the making of our traditions.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Juniper, Robert (illustrator). First Thus. This is the first Allen Lane (Penguin Group) 1983 edition of the original 1981 printing. This special edition has an added afterward by Jan Carter and endpapers depicting family photographs of the author. Navy boards with silver lettering in slipcase. Appears unread, crisp and clean, giftable/collectible copy. There is some light general wear to slipcase exterior and it is possible that the book spine and matching slipcase ends have faded slightly. On the back board is a small white spot (undyed thread in the cloth?) which appears to be a production flaw and there is very slight wear to boards in general. Binding and corners intact. A special copy of a special and very Australian book.
