Condition: used. Richard J.S. Young - Original 2012 Watercolour. With pastel and graphite, on Fabriano Artistico watercolour paper. Signed and dated. In fine condition."I enjoy colour and making marks. My drawings and watercolour paintings are explorations of how the paint or pencil interact with the paper. For me, my more interesting images are those that are cerebral and require some interpretation on the part of the viewer. Certainly, my exhibition pieces are like that. I am primarily a figurative artist, I enjoy drawing and painting the figure."Sulis Fine art Ltd. are thrilled to bring to you the works of Bath-based artist, Richard J.S. Young. Born in the leafy suburbs of Woking, Surrey in 1954, Richard's family moved to Australia a year later where they settled near Adelaide, and then in Woomera in South Australia. It was in Australia that Richard first began to discover his passion for the arts. Living in Woomera's arid and dry landscape, Richard became fascinated by colour and abstraction, using the library as his inspiration. He revelled in books displaying the paintings of Impressionist artists, particularly the works of CeÌ zanne and Matisse whose works offered a vibrant contrast to the landscape that surrounded him at the time. Young was particularly drawn by Turner's earlier landscapes and the pastiches that followed them, in particular the works of Mark Rothko. These influences stayed with Young throughout his life and career and he often consults the same books as a source of continual inspiration.Richard obtained a PhD in Chemical Physics at the University of Kent in Canterbury and has spent his life building a reputable career working in the field of solar energy. Young has stated that he had â chose to join his interests in art and science.I was inspired as a teenager by Leonardo Di Vinci who as a Renaissance man joined art and the sciences and pioneered many of the techniques of art and technologyâ . Richard manifested this grouping by designing pigments for ceramic glazes and also inks for screen printed electronic applications.Richard J S Young's artistic process indicates an artist who reflects the currents and motions of the outside world. His influences are diverse, extending to music, the figure, the sea and the desert. Current influences are drawn from the abstract expressionist works of Richard Diebenkorn, but greatly from Scottish artist Barbara Rae, whose â intense colour bursts that evoke dramatic landscapes but remain resolutely abstract' [RA Magazine, 2014], much in the same character of Young's works exhibited in this collection. Size: Medium (15-30cm) Framed: No Style: Expressionism.

No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. Original exhibition poster by Mark Rothko. 83 X 59 cm, in fine condition. Mark Rothko (September 25, 1903 February 25, 1970), was a Latvian-born American abstract painter. He is best known for his color field paintings that depicted irregular and painterly rectangular regions of color, which he produced from 1949 to 1970. Although Rothko did not personally subscribe to any one school, he is associated with the American Abstract Expressionist movement of modern art. Originally emigrating to Portland, Oregon, from Russia with his family, Rothko later moved to New York City where his youthful period of artistic production dealt primarily with urban scenery. In response to World War II, Rothko's art entered a transitional phase during the 1940s, where he experimented with mythological themes and Surrealism to express tragedy. Toward the end of the decade, Rothko painted canvases with regions of pure color which he further abstracted into rectangular color forms, the idiom he would use for the rest of his life. In his later career, Rothko executed several canvases for three different mural projects. The Seagram murals were to have decorated the Four Seasons Restaurant in the Seagram Building, but Rothko eventually grew disgusted with the idea that his paintings would be decorative objects for wealthy diners and refunded the lucrative commission, donating the paintings to museums including the Tate Modern. The Harvard Mural series was gifted to a dining room in Harvard's Holyoke Center (now Smith Campus Center); their colors faded badly over time due to Rothko's use of the pigment Lithol Red together with regular sunlight exposure. The Harvard series has since been restored using a special lighting technique. Rothko contributed 14 canvases to a permanent installation at the Rothko Chapel, a non-denominational chapel in Houston, Texas. Although Rothko lived modestly for much of his life, the resale value of his paintings grew tremendously in the decades following his suicide in 1970. In 2021, one of his works sold at auction for $82.5 million.

Printed on hand-made Barcham Green wove paper. Fine. Image size 158 x 123 mm (6.25 x 4.75 inches) Sheet size 30 x 30cm (11.75 x 11.75 inches) John Hubbard American 1931 John Hubbard was born in Connecticut in 1931 and read English at Harvard before going to Japan, where he served in counter-intelligence in the United States army and developed his interest in Chinese and Japanese art. Between 1956 and 58 he studied at the Art Students League, New York and at Provincetown, Massachusetts with Hans Hoffman. He then spent two years in Rome before moving to England. He has lived in Dorset since his marriage in 1961. John Hubbard visited England for the first time in 1958 and, with the abstract expressionism current in New York fresh in his mind, went to St Ives and met the painter Peter Lanyon. From 1960 onwards he has concentrated on a kind of landscape painting which goes beyond the depiction of appearance, alluding to natural forms, to the rhythms of growing things and recreating the experience of being in a particular place. In Dorset his interest in oriental painting and thought and the early influence of artists such as De Kooning, Mark Rothko and Mark Tobey became linked in his mind with the contemplation of the natural world. He has felt a particular affinity with the visionary art of Samuel Palmer, in 1969 exhibiting charcoal drawings after late Palmer watercolours. He has tended to work in series in Greece, Morocco, France, in his own garden in Dorset, in the gardens at Abbotsbury and Tresco and the Alhambra, Spain. He makes sketches and charcoal drawings in the open and works in the studio on larger charcoal drawings and the paintings, with their extraordinary sense of the dramatic and subtle This was plate 44, as published in A Tribute to Birgit Skiold . No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. Original Lithograph by Gudrun Von Leitner. 69/70 Edition, signed by the artist. 51 x 75 cm, in fine condition. Born in 1940, Gudrun Von Leitner's creative work was predominantly inspired by the 1950s. The 1950s can be said to have been dominated by Abstract Expressionism, a form of painting that prioritised expressive brushstrokes and explored ideas about organic nature, spirituality and the sublime. Much of the focus was on the formal techniques of painting, and ideas of action painting were conflated with the political freedom of the United States society as opposed to the strictures nature of the Soviet bloc. Key artists of the Abstract Expressionist Generation included Jackson Pollock (who innovated his famed drip, splatter and pour painting techniques), Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frank Kline, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Adolph Gottlieb. It was a male dominated environment, but necessary revisionism of this period has highlighted the contributions of female artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Louise Bourgeois, amongst others. Provenance: Suzy Locke.Thomas Whelan Benton was born on November 16, 1930 in Oakland, California. he attended Glendale high School and Glendale Junior College before enlisting in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After his discharge in 1953,Benton attended the University of Southern California and studied architecture under the G.I. Bill. He practiced architecture in Los Angeles where he designed a number of residential commercial buildings. Benton created a number of limited edition fine art prints in the 1960s and 1970s using abstract forms and organic themes. He drew upon his career as an architect, the strong influence of Eastern art, and artists such as Mark Rothko and Katsushika Hokusai. Benton incorporated Eastern symbols including calligraphy, sunsets and spirals. A solitary dove also became an integral element in Benton's art, symbolizing peace and the spirit of man. Benton's frequent use of the circle was a natural progression from his study of Eastern art. The circle, with its implied perfection, became a consistent element in his later work. He also incorporated natural forms such as waves and mountains as well as geometric shapes to add depth and dimension to his art. These works include large, abstract prints measuring up to three feet by three feet with complex designs and layered colors. Benton frequently printed designs in one color and then reused the silkscreen with a lighter, more translucent ink to create a faded, layered effect. He created these early silkscreen prints in limited editions of ten to forty-four. Benton avoided lengthy descriptions or interpretations of his abstract work. ?There are no hidden meanings,? he once told a reporter. ?I know art is often what other people bring to it. It's a take-off for their own psychobabble. I don't particularly want to hear it.?.

Condition: Good. Gouache on paper. 32 x 48cm. Signed and dated in the image and titled verso.Major piece in his prime. Provenance: The Padover family collection. Robert Pearson McChesney was one of the Bay Area's preeminent abstract painters. Born in Marshall, Missouri in 1913, he attended Washington University in St. Louis and completed his studies at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Moving to San Francisco in 1937, he was soon employed by the Federal Art Project painting murals for the Golden Gate International Exposition. He later assisted Anton Refregier in painting controversial murals in the Rincon Annex Post Office. He was deeply involved in the labor movement of the time, and became a merchant marine seaman. In his travels around the globe, he painted watercolors in his free time on board. This experience helped to free him from the boundaries imposed by 6 years of academic training. While teaching serigraphy at the California School of Fine Arts (now known as the SF Art Institute) in 1950-51, his colleagues included Ed Corbett, Hassel Smith, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still. The students, many of them war veterans, were generally of the same age group as the teachers, which led to a much looser, more congenial vibe than what he had experienced in his student years. In this so-called ?Period of Exploration,? the cumulative talent exploded into new modes of expression, from abstract expressionism to Bay Area Figuration. Due to disgust with McCarthyism and loss of their teaching jobs, ?Mac? and his wife, sculptor Mary Fuller McChesney, moved to Mexico in a Ford Model A mail truck reconfigured as a camper. En route, they spent time in Taos with Bea Mandelman and Louis Ribak, as well as San Francisco friends Ed Corbett and Richard Diebenkorn. In Mexico, Mac embarked on a new series of paintings, quite different from his previous work, dark, subtle, mystical abstractions in somber tones. When their money ran out, they moved back to the Bay Area. Given a piece of land near the top of Sonoma Mountain, they hand built their house, largely from scavenged materials. Mac then embarked on a new series, ?Mountain,? one of which was purchased by the Whitney Museum. The ensuing series, ?Arena,? received broad critical acclaim. After that came a series of mixed media works incorporating poured resins, bones, sisal, and other materials.
