Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. pp: 192. Pictorial laminated boards, issued without dust jacket. The editors offer a study of an account by a Dutch traveller of his experience living in Korea for some ten years in the seventeenth century. Hendrik Hamel (1630-92) was shipwrecked off the coast of Korea and was unable to leave the country for a decade. His published (1668) account of those years was the first reliable source of information on Korea in The West. A near fine copy with a small tear at the head of the bottom board. The text is clean and free of marks or notations.

SUN: Amsterdam, 2003 Hardcover, 192pp., 15.5x22.5cm., in very good condition (as new). ISBN 9789058751132. In 1653 the VOC ship Sperwer smashed to pieces on the rocks off a remote Korean island. There were thirty-six survivors. The king of Korea decided that the foreigners should spend the rest of their lives in his hermit kingdom. The Dutchmen were provided with food and housing and a certain amount of freedom of movement, but had no choice but to accept their fate. After 13 years eight of them managed to reach Japan in a small, barely seaworthy boat. Hendrik Hamel's report on their adventures soon became available to a wider public.
