Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. The Second Edition of "The Foundations of Aesthetics" by I. A. Richards, C. K. Ogden, and James Wood was issued by Lear Publishers in New York circa 1948. It reprinted the 1925 edition. The book, which, if not an expansion of the earlier edition, is then, supplementary to the chapter VII on Beauty in Richard's and Ogden's book, "The Meaning of Meaning". ******************************************* Both Ogden and Richards were highly influential in the fields of art and literary criticism and social philosophy. In the original Preface to the First Edition, the authors stated: "In the following pages an attempt is made to present in a condensed form the greater part of accredited opinion on the subject, and to relate the views thus presented to the positions from which the theory of art - criticism may proceed. It is hoped that in this way it will serve either as an introduction to those who from a literary point of view or as practical artists are interested in the problems which divergences of aesthetic judgments raise, or as a textbook for students of the Theory of Criticism itself. **************************************** The discussion therefore follows a rather unusual course, its aim being not to bring theories into opposition with one another, but by distinguishing them to allow to each its separate sphere of validity. If verbal conflicts are avoided, there will be seen to be many possible theories of Beauty, not one only, the understanding of which may help in the appreciation of Art." **************************************** TITLE : The Foundations of Aesthetics / AUTHORS : I. A Richards, C. K. Ogden, James Wood / IMPRINT : Lear Publishing / PLACE : New York / DATE : No date [but circa 1948] / EDITION : Second Edition / STATUS : OP / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Illustrated trade hardcover; Illustrations are reproduced in halftone monochrome; contains the Preface to the Second Edition, and the Preface to the First Edition, and an Index; has generous foot notes; [95] pages; 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"; red cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. *************************************** CONDITION - GOOD PLUS - This is a previously owned book which remains clean and serviceable, with the following imperfections and particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- Spine extremities are compressed and the spine is darkened and with the gilt lettering dulled; boards are mildly rubbed, and moderately weathered and darkened about the edges; there are small stains - or what look to be water droplet spots which have discolored the cloth (in the lower left corner of the front board); text-block edges are toned, else clean. / BINDING -- The book has obviously been well read and thus is not as tight as when issued, the leaves opening widely; however no leaves are detached or loose and the whole remains fairly solid. / INTERIOR There is the signature and place of residence , with date, written in ink at the top of the front flyleaf : (Anna Margaret Weber / St. Lawrence University / November 15, 1952) [Dr. Weber taught at St. Lawrence] ; end-papers are slightly toned; else the interior is clean and free of marking.
