Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Beckman, Ingrid (book design) (illustrator). As new condition white boards/red cloth spine/black spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Acknowledgments; Preface by Nobel Laureate Milton Friedman dated May 2, 1977; Foreword by Nobel Laureate F.A. Hayek; Notes; and Index. "This is a brilliant and passionate book by a brilliant and passionate man," writes Milton Friedman. "It is a profound analysis of the suicidal course on which our beloved country is proceeding -- so clearly and so simply written, with such eloquence, such obvious sincerity, such a broad base in recorded fact and personal experience, that it is hard to see how any reasonable man who wishes his fellow citizens well can fail to be persuaded by it." " I can assure the reader," writes F.A. Hayek, "that Mr. Simon is not UNDULY an alarmist. If we learn from him and the few people who think like him, we may still avert the threatening collapse of our political and economic order." With such endorsements from TWO Nobel Prize-winning economists, it is obvious that William E. Simon has written one of the most significant books for our country in this perilous time. In this book, Mr. Simon presents both his personal philosophy and an insider's revealing picture of the Nixon and Ford Administrations. He substantiates his important message with the wider perspective he gained in his stormy Washington years. His aim is to inspire all Americans to a critical awareness of the real and unbreakable connection between economic and political freedom. To lose one is to lose the other. To lose one is to lose the other. And we are losing both, he warns, in the wake of the expanding state. But Mr. Simon does more than warn us, more than reveal the dangers of too much government: he offers a blueprint for a "counter-intelligentsia" to preserve our freedom." -- from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: William E. Simon was Secretary of the Treasury from 1974 to 1977. He also served as Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, 1973-1974, and as CHairman of the Economic Policy Board, the Federal Energy Office, and the East-West FOreign Trade Board. Mr. Simon is now a Senio Advisor to Booz, Allen & Hamilton, Inc. and a Senior Consultant to Blyth Eastman Dillon & Co., Inc. - from the rear inner jacket flap.

Solid hardcover. ; A description of the income structure of the professions of medicine, dentistry, law, accounting, and engineering during 1929-36. "[W] Allen [Wallis] went first to New Deal Washington. Largely through his efforts, I followed in the summer of 1935, working at the National Resources Committee on the design of a large consumer budget study then under way. This was one of the two principal components of my later Theory of the Consumption Function. The other came from my next job - at the National Bureau of Economic Research, where I went in the fall of 1937 to assist Simon Kuznets in his studies of professional income. The end result was our jointly published Incomes from Independent Professional Practice, which also served as my doctoral dissertation at Columbia. That book was finished by 1940, but its publication was delayed until after the war because of controversy among some Bureau directors about our conclusion that the medical profession's monopoly powers had raised substantially the incomes of physicians relative to that of dentists. More important, scientifically, that book introduced the concepts of permanent and transitory income." - Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize Autobiography. Quite uncommon first edition of this early book co-authored by two future Nobel Prize economists. ; Publications of the National Bureau of Economic Research; Ex-Library; Vol. 45; xxxiii, 599 pages.

Uniform first Cresset Press edition hard back binding in publisher's original full cream buckram cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spines, deckle page edges. Folio. 14¾'' x 10½''. Matching pair by The Cresset Press Limited Edition numbered copies with hand written number 163 of 195 to each volume on Batchelor's hand-made paper (plus 10 copies on Roman Vellum). The final work printed by The Cresset Press, an independent press from 1927 for 40 years, and initially specialising in expensively illustrated limited editions of classical works, going on to produce well-designed trade editions of literary and political works. Milton's Paradise Lost is thought by many to be its finest work, and printed by Bernard Newdigate at the Shakespeare Head Press. With twenty wood-engravings by Demetrios Galanis (16 full-page, plus head and tail pieces in each volume) and the title-page and initial letters by Anna Simons. From the second edition, revised and augmented by the Author, printed at London by S. Simmons in 1674. Paradise Lost concerns the biblical story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton's purpose, stated in Book I, is to "justify the ways of God to men". Paradise Regained is a poem, first published in 1671, which is connected by name to his earlier and more famous epic poem Paradise Lost, with which it shares similar theological themes; indeed, its title, its use of blank verse, and its progression through Christian history recall the earlier work. However, this effort deals primarily with the temptation of Christ as recounted in the Gospel of Luke. Contains Volume I, (i)-xii, (1)-442, colophon; Volume II, (i-vi), (1)-88, colophon, illustrations throughout the text, limitation statement for each volume at the end of each volume. Both volumes are housed in a matching slipcase and in Fine condition. Heavy volumes 5 kg, extra postage will be requested over and above our default setting for destinations outside the UK. First Edition Signed
First edition of Milton Friedman's first book, co-authored with fellow Nobel Prize-winning economist, Simon Kuznets. Octavo, original blue cloth, gilt titles to the spine. Signed by Milton Friedman on the title page. In near fine condition. Income From Independent Professional Practice served as his Ph.D. thesis at Columbia. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Rare, especially signed. Milton Friedman established himself in 1945 with Income from Independent Professional Practice, co-authored with Simon Kuznets. In it he argued that state licensing procedures limited entry into the medical profession, thereby allowing doctors to charge higher fees than they would be able to do if competition were more open.
