Mencken's "American Mercury" by celebrated writers ranging from Sinclair Lewis to Sherwood Anderson, Thomas Wolfe, William Faulkner, Carl Sandburg, Zora Neale Hurston, Eugene O'Neill, Vachel Lindsay, William Saroyan and even Mencken (1880-1956) himself (and many, many other famous literary figures). American journalist and publisher Lawrence Spivak (1900-94) was publisher of The American Mercury but is best known for his later association with NBC's "Meet the Press." Charles Angoff (1902-79), a Mencken protege, was managing editor of The American Mercury.
