Book First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. Morgan, Virginia Kessler -Cover Design (illustrator). Assumed First Edtion. 82 Pages. No defects noted to this tight square bound paperback. Interior is faultless. Vintage photographs on many if not most pages. The editor, Margaret Reid is a sister to the author of all of the letters. Virginai Morgan, the designer of the wrap-around cover is a granddaughter of the author. This story of pioneer days in the Rosewell New Mexico area at the turn of the century is based on over 200 faded old letters, each one several pages long, all handwritten. The author's family moved from Ohiio to the territory of New Mexico in 1899. The rise of the cattle industry, the accidental discovery of artesjan water in 1891 had stimlated a modest land boom in eastern New Mexico. As an outlet for her grief at leaving Troy, Ohio Ruth, now age 16, began writing letters to a school friend Rollin Chattterton who saved them all over period of four years, Ruth reported in detail her new experiences to Rollin who not only answered but he saved each and they eventually came back to the family. Contents in Three Parts: Roswell New Mexico, Elk Lower Penasco, and a New Mexico Girl. The Kessler family moved to Dallas where Ruth was married to Dr. Lucien Rice in 1906. Ruth's younger sister Helen later married Rollin Chatterton, Ruth's friend to whom these letters were written. Ruth and Dr. Rice settled in Albuquerque where she served on the School Board from 1924 until her death in 1942.
