First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [solid reading copy, but that's about it: worn/bumped at top and bottom corners (boards exposed), several deteriorated spots on spine cloth, etc.] INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the half-title page: "To 'Fraulein' / at Black [Torkey?] / from / Eardley Beswick / Xmas '38." Novel set in and around Lancashire, England, with the action taking place before, during and after World War I. It's in rough enough condition that I probably wouldn't offer it for sale but for the authorial inscription -- I mean, it just might be the only extant Eardley Beswick signature! Signed by Author.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First American Edition. (no dust jacket) [moderately shelfworn copy, light bumping at several corners, slight exposure of board at bottom front corner, some soiling to edges of text block, gilt lettering on spine and front cover rubbed but still readable; an ex-library book, with label remnants on spine and pocket remnant on front pastedown; descriptive text from dust jacket glued to ffep]. "This vital novel has for its subject the insecurity of life in a machine age economy, though it is in no sense a 'thesis novel.'" (Well, that's a relief.) The book's setting is a large engineering firm in the English Midlands that's struggling to survive the depredations of the Depression. The New York Times gave it a featured review, opining that it "can stand honest comparison with the best of its order." ReadInk specializes in the works of Eardley Beswick -- nah, just kidding, but we do currently have two of his books for sale, and how many booksellers can make that claim?.

Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. First American Edition. 8vo. Pp. 364. Bound in bright red cloth with gilt lettering and rules stamped on front board and spine. In the illustrated dust jacket, edges worn and rubbed, light chipping at head and tail of spine, spine faded and with an old one-inch tape repair on verso. The dust jacket served its role well, preserving a cloth binding that remains notably bright. First American edition of Beswick's first novel. The superb art-deco dust jacket presents proles as threatened by the gnashing teeth of industrialization. Dust jacket illustrator uncredited. However, it mimics (or vice versa) the dust jacket for Frank Tilsley's The Plebeian's Progress, which also depicts diminished workers negotiating gear teeth.Perhaps the worst of the Great Depression was factory owners miniaturizing workers and then forcing them to run on the teeth of gears. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve. .
