Riveras Gemälde lebendig, explizit und oft monumental verströmen dieselbe politische und persönliche Passion wie seine Biografie. Durch die Fusion von europäischen Einflüssen wie dem Kubismus, einer sozialistischen Ideologie und mexikanischer Folklore schuf er für sein Land eine völlig neue, in der Kunstgeschichte einzigartige Bildsprache. Er wurde zu einem der wichtigsten Vertreter des mexikanischen Muralismo und erhielt internationale Anerkennung für seine öffentlichen Wandmalereien, in denen er eine utopische, aber zugängliche Vision von einem postrevolutionären Mexiko präsentierte. 1931 galt die insgesamt erst zweite monografische Ausstellung des MoMA seinem Werk.
