"Narratives and memoirs of settlement and homesteading are a well-established genre in Canadian writing (perhaps going back to Susanna Moodie and Roughing It In the Bush, 1852). But Diana Stevan, in the exciting story of her grandmother Lukia Mazurec, goes back to the source, to the story of a family before they emigrated to Canada.
This is material ripe for literary exploitation, and Stevan carries it off with real panache, seamlessly braiding together the familiar stories that her mother passed on to her in Canada with the meticulous research required to fill it all in.
