This astonishing wordless picture book tells the heart-rending story of an abandoned dog. In remarkable black-and-white pencil drawings, the artist shows us the dog being heedlessly thrown out of a car, chASINg after it fruitlessly and giving up, at last, unwittingly causing a major highway accident. Though the pictorial narrative begins on a shockingly bleak note, it ends as a triumph of pluck and the indomitable instinct for survival. While not for toddlers, older children and adults in large numbers will be caught up in this powerful documentary in picture-book form. Vincent is the author of many children's books, notably the Ernest and Celestine series (about the friendship of a gentle bear and a mouse). Her present book defies pigeonholing as either a work for children or for adults. It is a passionate condemnation of cruelty to animals and a work of art that shouldn't be missed.
