The Beginner Biography series supplies overviews of some of history’s most familiar names. The compact books do hit the high points, but vary somewhat in quality due to the different authors and illustrators. Helen Keller covers the familiar highlights, especially alongside teacher Annie Sullivan, but it also explains how a new companion came into her life after Sullivan died, as well as Keller’s work with soldiers injured in war. The artwork suffices but sometimes has an awkwardness to it that calls attention to itself. Very short notes throughout each book add welcome facts to these light treatments.
