Most of us go through life grappling with day-to-day, seemingly unrelated problems. What we fail to realize is that almost all of these problems can be traced back to ineffective communication. The Clarity Factor suggests that we refocus all the energy we put into solving everyday problems on changing the methods of communication that create the difficulties in the first place.

This charming, easy-to-read parable follows Gloria Donovan, a frustrated working mom, as she meets a stranger who teaches her four simple guidelines for improving her communication skills. As she implements these steps into her daily life, Gloria is surprised to find that people begin to not only listen to her, but understand her, and many of her troubles are resolved. Through her example, this story illustrates how anyone can improve relationships and eliminate hardships in both the personal and professional spheres through effective communication.

Regardless of what each of us does for a living, we are all in the communication business. How clearly we speak and listen directly affects not only the oppurtunities that come our way, but also the level of personal satisfaction and happiness we achieve as human beings.

In a study which polled top executives in fifty-eight of America's largest companies, every single executive named communication skills as a major factor in his or her advancement. Graduates of business schools continually report that communication skills are the most valued training they've received. And studies on divorce and human interactions prove time and again that poor communicaton is a major factor in failed relationships.

Though most of us are aware of these types of statistics, we rarely give communication skills that attention they deserve. Instead, we go through life wrestling with dozens of other seemingly unrelated issues-finances, personal relationships, child rearing conflicts, work relatonships, career decisions, and so on. As we struggle through the weeks and months grappling with these day-to-day concerns, we never stop to consider that how well we verbally express our own ideas and understand the ideas others express profoundly affects our lives.

The Clarity Factor is an attempt to refocus our attention. My aim in writing this book is to create an awareness of how proper use of verbal communication skills can not only calm and streamline your day-to-day life, but also expand your sensitivity to the subtle dynamics that govern all human interactions.

The four key "Focal Points" on which The Clarity Factor is based bring to light one critical, but often overlooked element in the verbal communication process-what I refer to as the Clarity Factor.
