About the Author:
Walter Crane, born August 15, 1845 in Liverpool, England, was an outstanding artist and book illustrator. Considered most influential among the children’s books of his age. Compared to Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway, by others are included in several Illustrated Children’s Classics. Offered by Searchtower Publishers today, promoting the golden age of illustrated classics of the late 1800’s until 1905, these are available through Amazon. Crane painstaking added more colorful and detailed characters, was part of the Arts and Crafts movement he in besides creating paintings, illustrations, ceramic tiles and other decorative arts. This is young Walter Crane as painted by his father. His father, Thomas Crane, a portrait painter and his older brother Thomas became an illustrator during his short lifetime. Sister Lucy was a writer and worked with Walter on several projects. Walter, a meticulous student of the artist/ critic John Ruskin. Crane became an apprenticed at fourteen years, for three years from 1859–62 to William J Linton, a wood-engraver, with many prominent works including Alice in Wonderland. Later developing his talent with the study of Japanese color-prints, seen if several of his Picture Books. From early on he drew cartoons for the Commonweal and The Clarion. After which he supported the work of the Art Workers Guild, he was a master of this in 1888 and 1889. Comparable to the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society in 1888. Visiting the United States for the first time with an exhibition in 1891. Only ended in disaster when his political points of view were greatly opposed to by the literary circles. Crane's interest in Japanese Art is so obvious in his 1874 cover of a book printed by Edmund Evans. In 1862 his picture The Lady of Shalott exhibited at the Royal Academy, In 1863 the printer Edmund Evans hired Crane to illustrate. In 1865 they worked in partnership on toy books of nursery rhymes and fairy tales, such as this book. From 1865 to 1876 Crane and Evans generated two to three toy books each year. “We can see Crane illustrated picture books with kid's perception of the world in mind.” Walter Crane wrote several essays on art and design working until his death in 1915. He died of broken heart only three months after his beloved wife Mary died in a traffic accident. Walter Crane's illustrations will still bring joy to many generations.
