(Applause Books). More than any other director, Francis Ford Coppola exemplifies the drive and invention of modern American cinema. Acclaimed since his first Godfather movie in 1972, he went on to win the Palme d'Or at Cannes for The Conversation and to make an unforgettable impact on audiences worldwide with the gripping Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now . He has also launched the careers of such actors as Nicolas Cage and Tom Cruise. In recent years, Coppola has returned to his roots to the low-budget, personal movie, written and directed without the involvement of the major Hollywood studios, working in Romania (for Youth without Youth ), Argentina (for Tetro ), and his home state of California (for Twixt ). Additionally, he has encouraged the work of other talented filmmakers from his daughter Sofia ( Lost in Translation , Marie Antoinette ) to Brazilian director Walter Salles ( On the Road ) to Robert De Niro ( The Good Shepherd ). In 2010, he was awarded his sixth Oscar the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. The tireless Coppola is also committed to winemaking, earning acclaim for his Niebaum-Coppola range and opening a second winery in the Sonoma Valley. Talking exclusively to Peter Cowie for the updated edition of this biography, Coppola looks back on the past 20 years and reflects on his much-cherished independence, as well as on the state of modern cinema.

About the Author:
PETER COWIE is a film historian who has written extensively on the work of Francis Coppola, and in particular The Godfather trilogy. He is the author of some 30 books (including biographies of Ingmar Bergman, Orson Welles and Louise Brooks, and Carlton's recent book on The Godfather) and was formerly International Publishing Director of the show-biz bible Variety.
From Library Journal:
On the heels of Michael Goodwin and Naomi Wise's On the Edge: The Life and Times of Francis Coppola ( LJ 9/15/89) comes another major biography of director Francis Ford Coppola. Cowie's book, first published in Great Britain (1989), is doubly unsatisfying. Although chock full of biographical details and occasional discussions of the films, its unbridled adoration of the man as hero-filmmaker makes it superficial for the scholarly reader. And matinee idolaters are likely to feel that they don't get enough inside dope on who the man really is and what makes him tick. The book doesn't have the clarity of the author's earlier Ingmar Bergman: A Critical Biography ( LJ 10/15/82), which provides much detail on the films and what they mean in human terms. Libraries should stick with On the Edge, which reads well, and is more scholarly to boot.
