From its roots in the blues sound of black American jazz in the 1930s to the stadium-rocking megastars of today. This book tells you how rock music has evolved, been influenced by and influenced other musical genres. The invention of the electric guitar in the 1930s was a turning point for music. It opened up genres such as jazz and country music and helped them evolve into an edgier, rockier sound. Featuring the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, glam rock stars like David Bowie and Mark Bolan, the legendary Led Zeppelin and the stadium rockers of the 1980s and 90s, right through to modern rock stars like the Queens of the Stone Age and Jack White, they all feature in this brilliant journey through musical history. The Story of Dance Music and Electronica is part of the series, Pop Histories, which takes a similarly detailed look at other popular musical genres.

About the Author:
Matt Anniss has edited and written for some of the most prestigious DJ magazines out there, including Mixmag and IDJ. He also DJs regularly in clubs around the world and has even released his own singles.
From School Library Journal:
Gr 6-9-Music fans will relish these overviews of the origins and histories of contemporary styles. Well-illustrated spreads describe the chronological development of each genre, emphasizing how new technologies expanded and segmented the music world. The main texts are supplemented by paragraph-length "Living Legend" profiles of significant artists as well as "Playlist" text boxes that direct readers to representative artists and songs so they can listen to the music on their own. There is considerable coverage of the British music scene, and material is skewed to current and very recent popular music, which could cause rapid dating. Pop and Rock are more superficial than the other titles, mostly because the format doesn't have the space for a fuller examination of their long and broad histories. This set is not particularly valuable for reference, but it will be a hit with younger teens, who will appreciate the energetic design and color photos.α(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journal.
