On a break from her job as an advice columnist at The Ravensford Chronicle, a small-town Massachusetts newspaper, Laura Magee is spending the summer as a saleswoman at the Tompkins Gallery in Safe Harbor, New Jersey. After selling a $20,000 painting by the reclusive artist Rafferty, and after the purchaser is murdered before taking possession of his purchase, Laura is soon dodging the couple who also tried to buy the painting and are now out to steal it, even if it means attacking Laura. She is saved by an old boyfriend, who is suffering from PTSD but who hangs around to watch over her. Soon the FBI is involved as well as the local police in a case that encompasses art fraud and murder. Well-drawn characters, the engaging art-focused frame story, satisfying plot twists, and the appealing heroine, approaching 30 and trying to find her direction in life, make for an entertaining story.
