Have you ever wondered why America has been so successful in developing technological marvels, while simultaneously falling into cultural and moral decay? We have bred crime and violence in the streets-and in our schools-while building a technological utopia of rockets, satellites, microchips and cellphones. This contrast between technological success, and social failure, is the mystifying dichotomy investigated in these pages.

The auther examines the causes of our social failures, and shows they are the result of ignoring the spiritual side of our human nature. He explains how a naturalistic mindset now controls our society, via information flow, which is dominated by our universities, our educational system and the media. These errors, having proliferated beneath the social surface for more than a century, have now erupted dramatically in the form of never-ending expansions of selfish freedom, excessive individualism and the weakening of Christian influence. The result is increased crime, drug abuse, spousal abuse, rape and "you name what's bad and we got it."

To counter this naturalistic mindset, that now dominates our country, McMahon outlines means by which we can respiritualize society.

In The Great Americam Dichotomy you'll learn:

* Why student SAT scores are falling.

* Why 45% of urban area public school teachers now send their own children to private schools.

* How universities became seedbeds of naturalistic ideas.

* Which social infrastructures allowed these ideas to permeate society.

* How the media manipulates and distorts the free flow of information.

* Why crime statistics will resume their upward spiral.

* And many other fascinating facts.

About the Author:
Richard McMahon, though an electrical engineer by profession, has for many years been a student of Western Civilization and the social, cultural and religious issues it raises. His life's avocation has always been to study and analyze the humanities to better understand the underlying meanings of life. He has read the metaphysical teachings of major philosophers from Aristotle to Sartre, the primary tenets of the major religions and studied many of the world's civilizations.

For more than 20 years, Richard McMahon wrote corporate reports that included numerous technical studies, proposals, plans and technical reports while working for UNISYS Corporation. His professional duties as a System Design Technical Manager, consisted of the design, generation and oral presentation of innumerable technical and marketing plans to corporate clients. While at UNISYS he won awards for "The best technical presentation" along with a variety of project advancement and service awards. In 1991, Richard retired from UNISYS to research and write The Great Americam Dichotomy.

Richard McMahon received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from South Dakota State University in 1952 and was offered an engineering assignment with Westinghouse Electric in Baltimore. In 1957, he left Westinghouse to accept a computer engineering position at UNISYS Corporation. Richard, and his wife Elizabeth, currently reside in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

From Library Journal:
While this work's stated aim is to provide a thoughtful analysis of the ills of American society, it is instead a diatribe. Retired engineer McMahon traces the country's demise to its rejection of the Christian faith and corresponding values. The problems all began, he states, with the growing popularity of pragmatism and naturalism in the universities in the latter half of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. This antispiritual thought has permeated society at large, he claims, resulting in a collapse of moral values, as evidenced by increasing crime rates, child abuse, vulgar art, and raucous music. These problems certainly exist, but McMahon offers simplistic explanations of our problems and equally simplistic remedies, taking aim at all the usual fundamentalist religious targets (e.g., sex education, the teaching of evolution). Similar to Robert Bork's Slouching Toward Gomorrah and William Bennett's The De-Valuing of America, this book should be well received by readers who already think in this vein. Those who are looking for a well-researched exploration of the topic will be disappointed. Not recommended. Deborah Bigelow, Leonia P.L., NJ
