The Kula is a form of exchange practiced by communities of the Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea's archipelago of Melanesia. When I began thinking about TRUCE I envisioned a kind of extensive exchange of images and ideas between a group of artists dis persed throughout 20 countries of the world. I was interested in the way these artists deal with their own specific contexts to understand the wider perspectives of contemporary culture, yet save their original ties to their own place. I wasn't looking at art as a product to be compared alongside other products, but as a possibility for creation of a large circle of exchanges, each related to a port of origin. I wanted to create my own private Kula where I could follow the thread of a series of thoughts u sed a currency in a system of conceptual developments. It is at the end of this transaction that I arrived at the idea of TRUCE, to be established between the world of exploitation and the realm of creation.
