Book Description Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. First Thus. In 1947 HM Stationery Office issued two important books listing the Admiralty's records of British ships lost during WWII. One covered the Royal Navy's losses, the other those of the Merchant Navy. Both publications soon became scarce and in 1976 both were reprinted by Patrick Stephens in one hard back edition for the first time and reprinted it the following year. In 1983 this was republished, the combined books with some additional material. The full title of the initial editiions was "Ships of the Royal Navy: Statement of Losses during the Second World War" and "British Merchant Vessels Lost or Damaged by Enemy Action during Second World War." The republished books were reproduced ". exactly as they first appeared, but in a smaller, more practical format." The combined volume is presented in two sections with each using the original pagination, total pages about 180. The naval section runs to 70 pages, including auxiliary vessels and landing craft, plus ship names index, while the merchantile section is 103 pages made up of four lists: ships lost by enemy action, fishing vessels lost by enemy action, merchant and fishing vessels damaged by enemy action, merchant and fishing vessels lost by other causes. Two appendices cover personnel casualties and monthly figures for numbers and tonnage for ships lost. There is also an index of ships names. The tabular listing in chronological order for naval vessel has columns for class of ship, name, tonnage, date of completion, date of loss and how and where lost. Tabulations for merchant losses differs, slightly beginning with date of loss, name. vessel type, gross tonnage, position of sinking, cause of loss, how lost and remarks. Final material in the book is a "War Dairy" giving a chonology of significent events in WWII, particualry relating to the war at sea. This is an invaluable reference for those interested in the naval and maritime history of WWII.
