The title sounds daft because (or in spite of the fact that) it's a quote from Richard Nixon upon seeing China's Great Wall. Walls from all over the globe are arranged in the following sections: symbolism, protection, materials, ornament. Hundreds of walls are represented in small, color photographs, while the text fluctuates between the general meditation or historical statement, and specific descriptions of particular walls. Walls span the Wailing and the Great to Grandma Prisbee's Bottle House and Les Grimes' "Hog Heaven," a pig paradise painted on the wall of a former L.A. meat packing plant. Some of the more incredible walls pictured and described are those once found near the Berlin Wall and those walls taken over by nature. No index. Annotation c. About the Author:
Michael Webb is a writer-photographer who has authored fourteen books and writes often for architecture publications. Arnold Schwartzman is a graphic designer, writer, and filmmaker whose movie Genocide won the 1982 Academy Award for best documentary.
From Library Journal:
"Walls are the building blocks of our homes and cities....and the blank canvases we paint or decorate." Simply stated, this quote sets the theme of this unique book, which is cleverly written by writer-photographer Webb and internationally known graphic designer/filmmaker Schwartzman. Having traveled the world to research, photograph, and collect stories about famous and not-so-famous walls that are part of everyday life, the authors start off by explaining the meaning of the word wall through examples from literature, history, and popular culture. They then portray each concept with stunning photography. The book is divided into four sections: "Symbolism" (e.g., the Berlin Wall), "Protection" (e.g., forts and castle walls), "Materials" (e.g., plaster, paint, glass, and brick), and "Ornament" (e.g, murals, Mexican tilework, and even graffiti). Webb and Schwartzman have taken a mundane object and successfully brought to light its overlooked importance. A fun addition to large general collections.DStephanie Papa, Baltimore Cty.
