From Booklist:
Gr. 3-5, younger for reading aloud. Based on a story by Juliana Horatia Ewing, this short chapter book is an old-fashioned piece of Victoriana, retold with appropriately festive watercolors. In the story-within-a-story plot, Godfather Garbel tells of his best Christmas as a child, the Christmas he mistook an elderly man for Grandfather Christmas. Meloni's watercolors are strikingly effective, evoking the warmth of a Christmas kitchen and the cold of a snowy English winter in lovely, if sober fashion. The formal writing style may put some children off; however, Christmas stories of any kind are highly motivational, and this volume is so nicely appointed that it is sure to attract readers seeking additional holiday fare.
