Gr. 6-12. With a clear overview of tumultuous conflicts between nations, these books in the People at Odds series use a straightforward historical approach supported by many examples of how common people have been affected, and often devastated, by political and military forces. Both books begin just after WW II and trace the conflicts to the present. India and Paki stan follows the history chronologically, emphasizing the initial geographic division of the two countries as the main source of conflict. Israel and the Arab World discusses the political scene more generally, drawing a clear picture of dissenting sides over many decades and including the views of world leaders. Both books are packed with valuable information and insights that will give students a firm foundation for understanding the source of these conflicts and a realistic view of the prospects for peace. The readable design includes black-and-white and color photos that highlight political leaders and show the suffering of ordinary people. Roger Leslie
