The work, which was commissioned and is maintained by the New York¿based Dia Center for the Arts, is composed of four hundred 15- to 20-foot shiny steel poles placed in a grid measuring 1 mile by 3,330 feet. The tips of the poles form an exactly even plane, like a bed of nails for some evil giant. During thunderstorms the poles act as lightning rods, creating a dazzling light show."
