Gr. 6-12. These books in the new At Issue in History series, a subset of the long-running Opposing Viewpoints, are much more user-friendly than the parent series, with its rigid point-counterpoint format. Both books begin with an overview of a specific historical event, followed by relevant essays, speeches, and editorials that present a chronological evolution of the event and its impact on history. The Bay of Pigs provides interesting explanations of the failed Cuban invasion and explores the effect of Communism on the U.S and foreign policies worldwide. More compelling is The Civil Rights Act, which includes strong essays from civil rights leaders, politicians, and journalists. Both volumes close with appendixes and suggestions for further reading. In their lively depiction of events as they evolved, these volumes offer a balanced analysis that allows readers to assess the information and draw their own conclusions about some of history's most challenging and sometimes painful episodes.
