In a large corporation handling the research and development of military hardware, a young man, suffering from amnesia, finds himself caught between two groups--one that wants the West to secede before all its raw materials are exploited by the East, and another that wants to preserve the union.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 8-11 Short-sighted and ecologically dangerous federal policies have alienated the western states, who are threatening to start a second Civil War. Paul Killian, 18, can't remember what happened during the crucial hour when his abusive father was murdered, and his vulnerabilityhe may have been the murderercauses him to be recruited by both sides in the conflict. In the climax, when Paul discovers the rebels' ties to Middle Eastern terrorism, he remembers enough of his childhood to realize that his father had been sexually abusing Paul's half sister, which led to the killing. A classic teen rebel, Paul learns to understand himself in many ways. He falls in love with the beautiful daughter of the president of a defense contract company, then her sister. Through all of this, he learns a lot about the fragility of both friendships and ideals. The blend of science fiction and political thriller serve as convincing background for this coming-of-age tale. Carolyn Caywood, Virginia Beach Public Library

From Publishers Weekly:
Dragons, per se, have little to do with this speculative novel set in the near future. Paul Killian is a brilliant young inventor recruited to work for both the largest defense contractor in the country and for terrorists trying to wrest the Western stateswith all their resourcesaway from the Union. Paul must choose sides in this developing civil war as he comes to terms with violent memories of his father and his youth. With their muscular style and highly structured narrative, the authors may remind readers of the writings of Robert Cormier. This book, however, is broader and more fantastic thanAfter the First Deathand it has a happier ending. The result is a sophisticated, searching portrait of Paul that incorporates history, intrigue and love.
