Less than 30% of Americans still smoke and many states, municipalities and corporations have promulgated regulations curbing the right to smoke in public and workplaces. Concentrating on the dangers of indoor air pollution to nonsmokers, (or passive smokers), TV personality-writer Allen and Adler ( The Lottery Book ) inform readers on how to form nonsmokers rights groups and enact nonsmokers rights laws, including lobbying and enlisting celebrities as allies to battle the tobacco industry. But, while the authors aver that the aim of the nonsmokers rights movement is not "to stop the production and consumption of cigarettes," they also argue that "nothing short of the outright elimination" of smoking will protect nonsmokers. The book is guaranteed to raise smokers' hackles.

Television star Allen has joined writer Adler to produce this call to arms for antismoking activists. The effect on health of inhaling second-hand smoke is contrasted with the ability of the tobacco companies and their lobbyists in suppressing regulation. Procedures are given for forming nonsmokers' rights groups to lobby for the passage of legislation to ban smoking in public places. Lists of state and local nonsmokers' rights groups, sample ordinances, and a glossary are included in appendixes. Confronting careless smokers is an unpleasant task, which the authors hope to ease by placing the law on the side of the nonsmoker. Recommended for larger libraries.
