His conversational style makes the book especially approachable, and his coverage of the subjects' childhood experiences, family lives, and schooling is notable. Through a generous use of quotations and anecdotes (sources are cited), he clearly conveys the personality of each figure. Many of them overcame a multitude of challenges in their early years, from poverty and child abuse to difficulties with formal education. Still, the emphasis here is on the positive aspects of their lives, stressing their enthusiasm for knowledge of human history and dedication to preserving cultures. Students will need to look elsewhere for complete information on events marking their adult lives. Black-and-white photographs and illustrations enhance each biography.
