From Publishers Weekly:
This is an admirably simple, clear telling of the rather complicated story of King Ahasuerus, Queen Esther, her cousin Mordecai and the villain Haman. Esther becomes queen after her predecessor is banished; she and Mordecai, the king's scribe, save the king more than once from those who plot against him, including Haman. When Haman sends soldiers to kill the Jews, the King--due to Esther's pleading--gives the Jews permission to rise and defeat their tormentors. Lush illustrations in an earth-toned, biblical setting enhance the storytelling; included is a recipe for hamentaschen--the pastry associated with the holiday--as a song and a thoughtful addendum of Purim lore. Ages 6-10.
