Grade 5-9-- This clearly told story of the life of this proud, intelligent man is also the story of the civil rights movement. DuBois, tirelessly and arrogantly at times, conducted a lifelong crusade to insure that every person, regardless of race, had all the rights, privileges, and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States. The McKissacks reveal his frustration with the divisiveness within the movement and among its leaders, causing him to embrace the socialist movement and eventually to become a member of the Communist party. His self-exile to Ghana and becoming a citizen of that nation is briefly mentioned. A revealing book, illustrated with black-and-white photographs, that should entice readers to seek more information about this complex man.
