About the Author:
Julia Noonan's luminous pastels have graced Over the Rainbow, a recent picture-book version of the song from The Wizard of Oz; Dreamland: A Lullaby, by Mary Chapin Carpenter; and many other popular picture books.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-In this charming book, a sad little mouse wearing a polka-dotted party dress and red shoes is sitting on a rock: "One mouse sits alone and blue./Her friend joins her./That makes two." They discover a box of cookies and a tea bag nestled among the grass and flowers. "`Look!' says Two. `It's time for tea.'" Mouse Five is stuck inside a soda bottle and rescued by One, Two, Three, Four, Six, and Seven, and, before long, the garden is filled with 10 friends who spend the day frolicking and eating. Finally, they return home; take off their various clothes, hats, and backpacks; and snuggle down into an empty candy wrapper aptly named the Milky Way. Each adorable creature has a number on its pastel-colored clothing. Other details are wonderful as well, such as Nine in snorkel and fins splashing the others swimming in a paper plate filled with soda. Upon first glance, the pages are full-spread watercolors, but every other right-hand turn is of a three-quarters page, followed by the introduction of the next number. The minimal text and humorous illustrations make this a perfect title for toddler and preschool storytimes.
