Tribal art has been one of the great inspirations of 20th-century Western art. Europeans such as Picasso, Matisse, Ernst and Brancusi created their own responses to masks, sculpture and other forms of African, Oceanic and American art. But is this a cross-cultural discovery to be celebrated, or just one more example of Western colonial appropriation?

About the Author:
Nicholas Thomas is Director of the Centre for Cross-Cultural Research at the Australian National University, Canberra.
From Library Journal:
As the relationships between colonial powers and indigenous peoples are re-evaluated, the profound influence of the art of Africa, Oceania, and the Native Americas on the development of modern Western art has become a controversial topic. This book provides an in-depth analysis of "primitivism" in Australian and New Zealand art from the early 19th century to the present. In addition, Thomas examines the use of art as a response to the colonial situation in modern works by the Aborigines and Maori. While many of the issues raised by Thomas are insightful and provocative, only a handful of scholars in America will recognize the artists profiled. The text is densely packed with factual details and conceptual analyses, making it accessible primarily to art historians specializing in modern and ethnoart. In addition, the photographic reproductions of the art under discussion are generally of mediocre quality. Recommended for academic art libraries.AEugene C. Burt Seattle

Book Description Softcover. Condition: New. Paperback edition. Tribal art has been one of the greatest inspirations for twentieth-century Western artists. Picasso, Matisse, Ernst, and Brancusi responded in unforgettable ways to masks, sculpture, and other forms of indigenous African, Oceanic, and American art. The politics of this relationship have long been a matter of contention: is it a cross-cultural discovery to be celebrated, or just one more example of Western colonial appropriation? This revelatory book looks at the distinctive situation of the settler society--countries in which large numbers of Europeans have displaced, outnumbered, but never entirely eclipsed native peoples. In this dynamic of dispossession and resistance, settler artists and designers have drawn on tribal motifs and styles, while powerful indigenous art traditions have been used to assert the presence of native peoples and their claim to sovereignty. Cultural exchange proves to be a two-way process, and an unpredictable one: much contemporary indigenous art draws on modern Western art, while affirming ancestral values and rejecting the European appropriation of tribal cultures.
