Find Demi's Baby Animals - Hardcover

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- The prolific Demi presents another of her hide-and-seek game books similar to her Find the Animal ABC (Grosset, 1985). Here, a picture of a baby animal engaged in an activity is presented in an inset on a double-page spread featuring an outline of a larger version of the animal. Inside the outline are many pictures of the baby animal in various poses, some similar to the inset. The idea is to find an exact match. Twenty-one animals, wild and domestic, are featured. The double-page spreads, either vertical or horizontal, are set against a variety of patterned backgrounds. Although the matches are all there, they call for sophisticated skills as many of the poses are deceptively similar. The whole, done in pale pastel shades or subdued darker tones, does not pull readers in as does We Hide, You Seek (Greenwillow, 1979) by Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey. In sum, this is derivitive of Demi's own work and, while mildly effective, is not particularly distinguished. --Christine Behrmann, New York Public Library
