In this book, John Herman Randall offers a personal statement of the significance of Plato. He sees Plato as a dramatist whose dialogues "cannot be adequately considered as straightforward philosophical treatises in which every scrap of discussion is to be viewed as the literal expression of the author's views." The dialogues cannot be read or understood, he believes, as one reads and understands Aristotle or Kant, but must always be approached with an awareness of Plato's use of ambiguity and irony as dramatic techniques.
