The life and times of the great statesman as he saw it.

"This beautifully produced volume brings Churchill vividly to life... The book richly reveals both the private and public sides of the war leader and rhetorician. Churchill emerges as a fully human figure and treads the historical stage with a new energy. Highly recommended."

Winston Churchill was and still is a large presence. No fewer than five recent film productions in as many years -- Churchill; The Darkest Hour; The Crown; Churchill's Secret and Dunkirk -- have attempted to present the controversial leader accurately. But for good or worse, we can only turn to the man himself and his contemporaries for the true story.

Churchill, The Life uses his words, personal documents and photographs as well as private and public memorabilia to commemorate the private, military and political man who many consider "the greatest Briton of all time" and the best friend the United States ever had. Many of the items are published here for the first time.

Eight sections narrate Churchill's monumental life and achievements:

  • Youth 1874-1903 - Unhappy son of a British duke and American mother; student; father's death
  • Early Military Career 1898-1916 - Soldier; war reporter; escaped prisoner; author; husband and father
  • Early Political Career 1899-1922 - Decorated soldier; parliamentarian; government minister
  • The First World War - Political defeat and blunders; American lecture tour; government minister
  • Rising Through the Ranks - Political legacy of the Great War; government minister; painter; farmer
  • The Second World War - Prime Minister; V-E Day
  • Post-War Years - Political defeat; "Iron Curtain" Speech; daughter's suicide; death of second daughter
  • Legacy - Statesman; historian; Honorary Citizen of the United States; Nobel Prize Laureate, final days.

Compelling, exhaustively researched, filled with informative captions and quotes, rarely seen and never before seen period photographs and ephemera -- this is a book worthy of its subject that will entice fans of military and world events and historical figures. An essential purchase for all collections.

Review:
[Review of hardcover edition:] Churchill: The Life, An Authorized Pictorial Biography by Max Arthur is an elegant and lavish work that uses about 225 photographs to illustrate the many varied aspects of Churchill's life. The selection of photographs include the famous Karsh and Steichen portraits of Churchill as well as the well-known images of Churchill as a Boer prisoner, at Sidney Street, aboard the Prince of Wales, with Stalin and Roosevelt, and with the royal family at Buckingham Palace on V-E Day.... Many less well known photographs are included [of] both Churchill's political and personal life... the politician with his family... pursuing his hobbies (golf, bricklaying, polo, flying, painting)... memorabilia (cigars, dispatch box, watch) and facsimiles of Churchill letters, speech notes, newspaper articles, and other documents. The most interesting of these documents is the Harrow Punishment Book. All of the images are crisp and clear. (Bradley P. Tolppanen Blog on Winston Churchill 2016-02-14)

[Review of hardcover edition:] This beautifully produced volume brings Churchill vividly to life... The book richly reveals both the private and public sides of the war leader and rhetorician. Churchill emerges as a fully human figure and treads the historical stage with a new energy. Highly recommended. All levels and libraries. (J. D. Lyons Choice 2016-03-01)

[Review of hardcover edition:] This authorized pictorial biography by British oral historian Arthur provides an intimate portrait of Churchill by examining photographs and documents (some previously unpublished) from each phase in the former British prime minister's life. Arthur traces developments in Churchill's family--particularly his relationship with his wife, Clementine--and his political career. First elected to the parliament in 1900, Churchill played an active role in British politics for more than five decades until he resigned from the position of prime minister in 1955. Arthur stresses the importance of his legacy by including images of Churchill participating in major historical events such as the Yalta Conference in 1945. He provides illuminating commentary on some photographs, but often allows the historical figures to speak for themselves. Quotations from Churchill, his family, friends, and colleagues appear throughout the book, enabling the reader to understand how
Churchill's contemporaries viewed him while also hearing echoes of his own words. This unique compilation of documents, visually stunning photographs, and personal details will appeal to avid fans of Churchill and casual readers who want to learn more about this influential man.
