Elements of Sociology: A Critical Canadian Introduction has become a cornerstone of Oxford's domestic sociology list. The first edition, published in 2007, stood out in a crowded market and earned followers in both the college and university markets.

The factors contributing to the success of the first edition of Elements of Sociology have been preserved in this new edition. First and foremost of these is the authors' narrative. The tone-conversational, direct, shot through with anecdotes that make the subject matter real and engaging for students-remains lively and uniquely Steckley/Letts. The reading level continues to be accessible and approachable for first-year students entering both college and university, and John Steckley's extensive and intimate knowledge of First Nations issues once again allows Elements to cover this perspective with an authority and sensitivity not found in competing texts.

New to this second edition are three chapters covering Social Interaction and Organization, Education, and Religion, as well as a 'Going Global' box in each chapter that weaves globalization issues throughout the text. Updated statistics, coverage of current events and their relationship to sociological principles, an accompanying DVD with clips chosen specifically for its correlation with the text's content, and an updated art program as well as a completely new and fresh design guarantee that Elements of Sociology will remain a definitive critical introduction for students studying sociology at the introductory level.

Review:
"Elements of Sociology is that rarer of birds - a textbook that satisfies the pedagogical goals of the instructor (especially insofar as stimulating the student's sociological imagination is concerned), while also equipping the student with the tools necessary to participate in that endeavour in an accessible, meaningful, and therefore effective, way." --Janice Drodge, Cape Breton University

What Students Are Saying: "I love this book...It makes me want to read more and learn more about sociology". "I absolutely LOVED this textbook. It was modern and used really recent examples...It was really easy and interesting to read. It didn't bore me to death like ALL of my other textbooks seem to do. This resulted in me actually getting all the readings done on time or even early". "Just wanted you to know that your textbook blows my mind daily and you guys are totally awesome".
